Stronger links needed between student choice and universities’ societal contribution

Professor Ellen Hazelkorn is interviewed on BBC Radio Wales calling for stronger links between what students want and what society needs from higher education.

In the interview, which was broadcast on 2 July 2017, Professor Hazelkorn warns of universities’ over-reliance on student numbers, arguing that a market-driven focus does not enable higher education to meet societal needs.

Professor Hazelkorn also says that a ‘balancing act’ is needed to enable Welsh universities to remain integrated with the broader UK higher education system while maintaining their competitiveness. She points out that Brexit makes this goal more urgent than ever.
