CGHE Postdoctoral Autumn School 2026: How to write about higher education

Date: Monday, 7 September 2026 9:00 am to Tuesday, 8 September 2026 5:00 pm

The Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) is pleased to announce its second residential Early Career Researcher Autumn School, to be held on the 7th and 8th September at Oxford’s Department of Education.

The Autumn School is aimed at those who have completed their PhD within the last three years, and who are working towards a permanent academic post.

It is organised in conjunction with CGHE’s partner universities: Birmingham, Lancaster, UCL Institute of Education, Hang Seng University of Hong Kong and the University of Johannesburg.

Twenty places are available. Only postdoctoral HE researchers who are within three years of doctoral graduation, and who do not hold a permanent academic position, are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to those affiliated with cognate higher education research centres or programmes. The Autumn School will seek to ensure a diverse representation of researchers from all global regions.

The focus of the two days will be on academic writing: grants, publications, blogs and other forms of knowledge sharing and public engagement. Participants will be encouraged to share their current writing and give feedback to others.

The workshop will include visiting speakers and contributions from CGHE colleagues. This is a chance to build a cohort, to network with peers, and talk about shared challenges.

There will be opportunities for informal networking and Oxford tours on Wednesday 8th September.

Costs: £75 (with reductions for the unemployed and those based in LMICs), includes lunch, dinner and refreshments for two days, plus a full programme of workshops. Accommodation costs are likely to be around £100/day: good value college rooms are available here. A small number of bursaries covering UK travel and accommodation will be available.

To apply: Email david.mills@education.ox.ac.uk with your CV, and a 500-word summary of your current HE research interests, explaining how you will benefit from attending this year’s CGHE Autumn School.

Closing date for priority applications, and for those requesting bursaries is 15 June.
