The displacement of roughly 12% of Ukraine’s academic workforce after 2022 challenges European higher education to transition from emergency rescue to long-term institutional belonging. Drawing on 45 qualitative interviews across the UK, Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic, this study examines how displaced Ukrainian scholars negotiate professional identity and epistemic agency. The comparative analysis reveals four distinct institutional regimes: 1) hospitality in the UK: strong emergency support alongside temporary “guesthood” without long-term career pathways; 2) recognition in Germany: deep research integration constrained by project-based funding; 3) partnership in Poland: relational inclusion leveraging shared networks and reciprocal collaboration; and 4)  translation regime in Czechia: entry facilitated by cultural familiarity and professional re-socialization. Institutional belonging is conceptualized across four interdependent dimensions: recognition, participation, material security, and futurity. The findings demonstrate that displaced researchers actively evolve from aid recipients into co-producers of knowledge and agents of institutional change. Ultimately, sustainable integration requires shifting from humanitarian protection toward structural epistemic justice.
