Despite consistently high aspirations, British Pakistani and Bangladeshi students remain underrepresented at elite universities. Existing literature often explains this through deficit accounts that overlook the relational nature of hope and aspiration. Drawing on family workshops within a 19-month mixed-methods study, this seminar analyses intergenerational storytelling and life maps created by 38 British Pakistani and Bangladeshi families in England. Thinking with Shafak’s (2024) There Are Rivers in the Sky, and its evocation of rivers as disappearing, returning and taking new forms, we trace how hope similarly moves across generations and educational journeys. Findings unfold across three moments: hope is first gathered and carried through intergenerational lineages of learning; it then changes course through migration, loss and racialised inequalities; finally, it resurfaces as families negotiate educational pathways and reimagine what becomes possible. Together, these findings advance a conceptualisation of cyclical hope. If hope is sustained relationally rather than individually, widening participation initiatives must cultivate the conditions in which intergenerational hope can endure, circulate and flourish across families, communities and educational institutions. Reconceptualising hope informs higher-education access strategies recognising families as central.
