CGHE Webinar 79

Is there an international crisis in the humanities?

Date: Tuesday, 22 May 2018 12:30 pm to Monday, 21 May 2018 2:00 pm
Location: Room 804, UCL Institute of Education
Speaker(s):
  • Dennis Ahlburg, Trinity University, Texas

Over the last decade, a heated debate has raged in the US and the UK over whether the humanities are in crisis, and, if there is one, what form this crisis takes and what the response should be.

Questioning how there can be such disagreement over a fundamental point, this seminar explores this debate, asking whether the humanities are in crisis after all by objectively evaluating the evidence at hand, and opening the debate up to a global scale by applying the questions to 11 countries from different continents.

The seminar addresses the following questions:

  • What does each country mean by the ‘humanities’?
  • Is there a ‘crisis’ in the humanities in this country?
  • If there is a crisis what form does it take?
  • What are the causes for the crisis?

The seminar will present an overview for all 11 countries but will focus primarily on the US and the UK.
