Project 1

International Student Funding Network

About this project

The CGHE International Student Funding Network was created following an international workshop on student funding organised by Claire Callender and Ariane de Gayardon in January 2024 in London. The workshop’s success, the strong community interest, and the depth of discussions highlighted the need for a structure to sustain the dialogue on student funding between academics worldwide.

The CGHE International Student Funding Network aims to

  • bring together a global community of researchers from wide-ranging disciplines and at different stages of their career to engage with the complex issues involved in student funding;
  • exchange and debate ideas, and engage and share research on the specific topic of student funding;
  • explore intersections and new directions across lines of work, and identify potential areas for collaborations; and
  • influence policymaking, by linking research to policy to shape how student funding systems develop.

The CGHE International Student Funding Network is led by a team of academics committed to providing a platform for building relationships between scholars working on similar issues relating to student funding. They aim to support and foster dialogue in the fragmented global landscape of student funding research.

The network currently comprises 21 members affiliated with institutions across 10 different countries:

Members of the network meet monthly to discuss current research and policy issues. In 2024/2025, they have discussed/will discuss the following topics, with presentations from network members and guest speakers:

  • Ways of understanding the student funding discourses globally
  • Data and methods for cross-country comparison of student funding
  • From research to policy
  • Policy update on the US, Chile, and Australia
  • Building capacity on student funding research for the future

In addition to monthly meetings, network members have access to a mailing list, a shared folder, social online coffee breaks, and social events organised at conferences.

For further information on the network or to offer a seminar on a topic related to student funding, please contact Ariane de Gayardon (a.degayardon@utwente.nl).
