What do we mean by ‘higher education studies’, the field of social science research that underpins the Centre for Global Higher Education and this webinar series? What kind of academic inquiry falls under this heading? What are the purposes of the research and scholarship, what are its themes and issues, what are the other disciplines that have influenced it, and what is the contribution of this research to higher education and to the world? What is it in the work of higher education researchers that can make the average vice-chancellor or president sweat and the best minister of education beam with gratitude? Or vice versa.

Our panel of active researchers in higher education studies will each briefly tackle the question in the webinar title before inviting the participant audience to join with questions and discussion. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see and hear the research field up close and personal, and to help it to better connect with its core missions. What is your take on what should be the focus of higher education research? What are the burning issues right now that must be addressed?

Professor Paul Ashwin

Paul Ashwin is Professor of Higher Education, Lancaster University. He played a key role in creating CGHE, was a CGHE Deputy Director and led the Centre’s Graduate Experiences of Employability and Knowledge project.

Dr Golo Henseke

Golo Henseke, an Associate Professor at UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society (IOE), is an applied economist with a track record of publications in leading journals and leadership in diverse, externally funded research projects.

Professor Diana Laurillard

Diana Laurillard leads CGHE Project 2, ‘Realising the potential of digital technology for scaling up higher education’. Diana is Professor of Learning with Digital Technologies, UCL Knowledge Lab. Formerly Head of the e-Learning Strategy Unit at Department for Education and Skills (2002-5); Pro-Vice Chancellor for learning technologies at the Open University (1995-2002). Recent book: Teaching as a Design Science, Routledge. Researching MOOCs, learning design, and digital games for dyscalculia.

Dr Xin Xu

Xin Xu (许心) is a Departmental Lecturer in Higher/Tertiary Education at the University of Oxford. Her research concentrates on higher/tertiary education and research.

David Mills

David Mills is Director of the Centre for Global Higher Education. His current research interests include the political economy of academic research and publishing in Africa. His most recent book is ‘Who Counts: Ghanaian Academic Publishing and Global Science’, co-written with colleagues from the University of Ghana and Oxford.

Minto Felix

Minto Felix is a doctoral student originally from Melbourne who is investigating research culture in Indian higher education at the University of Oxford Department of Education. He is a graduate of the Department’s MSc (Higher Education) program. Outside of Oxford, Minto is a strategy and public policy consultant with the Nous Group, who work with higher education institutions in the UK and globally.
